Dale Farm in Essex, England, is thought to be Europe’s largest gypsy/Irish traveller site, and on 31 August is facing the violent eviction of its 1000 residents.
The site was legally bought eleven years ago, but the local council refused to give planning permission for a permanent traveller site. The council have been harassing the travellers on the site for the past ten years to try to evict them.
Everyone from the United Nations to the Catholic church has supported the travellers, (…)

Defence scientists secretly tested E.coli bacteria as a possible biological weapon in and around two British towns, documents revealed today.
Between winter 1965 and November 1967 a series of Government trials involving the release of "microthreads" covered in the bacteria were carried out near Swindon and Southampton.
The experiments are detailed in the 1966 Ministry of Defence report on the Microbiological Research Establishment at Porton Down, Wilts.

A British news agency said Wednesday that one of its photographers had suffered a leg injury during sectarian clashes in Belfast, Northern Ireland, overnight Tuesday.
Hundreds of rioters threw petrol bombs and attacked police vans in east Belfast on Tuesday as sectarian violence flared up for a second night in Northern Ireland. -

Six British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in the last ten days. The father of one of them asked in an article in the Independent if his son’s death had been "a price worth paying", to which a serving soldier on leave from Afghanistan wrote in reply an emphatic "no".
