TEHRAN, Aug 13 (IPS) - By the time it was banned, a week before the Aug. 6 swearing in of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as President of Iran, a bold Ta’zieh (traditional tragedy theatre) on the 1997 serial assassinations of several leading dissident intellectuals, had already had a month-long run.
That month was wide enough a window in Iran’s restricted intellectual world to bestir the country’s young and thinking middle-class to flock to the capital’s main theatre and see for (…)

How Can We Stop The Machine?
11 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
10 commentsHow Can We Stop The Machine? J. Russell Tyldesley August 05, 2005 Mr. Chuckman’s article, "Hitler’s Shadow and the Coming Storm," is broad in scope. The analogies to Hitler’s Germany are insightful and, I believe, are far more numerous than those mentioned. What worries me the most is the inability or unwillingness of the American people to stop the Bush machine in its tracks. This was the fatal mistake of the Germans, although many tried and many saw the coming threat. One of the (…)

DOES GOD NEED BUSH’S HELP?

August 9, 2005
By Peter Fredson
Theodore Roosevelt, he of the “Speak softly, but carry a big stick,” motto, at times rattled sabers, did considerable bullying, and did not hesitate to commit armed forces in dubious circumstances. He also was familiar with ‘yellow’ journalism, exemplified by the Hearst publications and seemed to enjoy the rough-and-tumble tactics of opponents who sought to slander his every move.
He also said: "To announce that there should (…) -
An Apology From a US Christian to Palestinians
10 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsThis is my apology for Christians in the US to Muslims, the Arab World, and particularly Palestinians. Too many of my co-religionists have made a travesty of the Golden Rule which unequivocally compels us, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
For example Ed McAteer, founder of the Moral Majority, and a Christian Zionist who doesn’t believe Israel should relinquish any of the illegally occupied territories, was asked by Bob Simon of CBS News: "What about the three million (…) -
The Jews of Iraq - "Jews killed Jews"
9 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
"I write this article for the same reason I wrote my book: to tell the American people, and especially American Jews, that Jews from Islamic lands did not emigrate willingly to Israel; that, to force them to leave, Jews killed Jews; and that, to buy time to confiscate ever more Arab lands, Jews on numerous occasions rejected genuine peace initiatives from their Arab neighbors. I write about what the first prime minister of Israel called "cruel Zionism." I write about it because I was part of (…)

It was a hot and humid night
9 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By Haim Handwerker
On a hot and humid Manhattan summer night, some 70 businessmen were on the balcony of developer Ofer Yardeni’s large penthouse in the Ritz Plaza building for a most unusual encounter.
The guest was Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto of Ashdod. Yardeni invited prominent Jewish American businessmen active in real estate, most not religious, to hear a Torah lesson and receive a blessing from the rabbi. The event, which started at 7:30 P.M. - the rabbi himself only came at 9 - ended at (…) -
Bush pushes very hot button President’s comments embolden anti-evolutionists
9 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
by Joe Garofoli
The real impact of President Bush weighing in on the national debate over how to teach the origins of life may be felt in the classroom, where much of the anti-evolutionary lobbying is done under the radar.
One tactic is for a student or parent to present the teacher with a list that’s popular in conservative circles called, "Ten questions to ask your biology teacher."
The result, observers say, is that some teachers fear even mentioning "the e-word."
"That’s what (…) -
A WIN FOR SCIENCE!
8 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By William Fisher
Hooray, a win for science!
At last, there is something nice I can say about John H. Marburger III, President Bush’s science advisor.
It’s about time. I have usually found myself being critical of Dr. Marburger for either being complicit or remaining silent as the Bush White House adopts anti-science policies or spins science to pander to the President’s base of right wing religious fanatics.
I have disagreed with him on issues ranging from sex education (sex (…) -
Phoenix Diocese bans politicians who support abortion, gay rights
7 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsPHOENIX - Politicians who support issues like abortion and gay rights have been banned from speaking at Catholic churches in the Phoenix Diocese.
So far, Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano has been the only one affected by the edict from Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted.
Napolitano was forbidden to speak last year at a Catholic church in Scottsdale at an event opposing Proposition 200, a ballot measure that restricted the rights of undocumented immigrants. The event was moved to another (…) -
Few want vote in booming Dubai
6 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By Heather Sharp
As part of a series about young people in the Middle East, the BBC News website reports on views about democratic reform in a city where change does not seem high on the agenda.
"We live in the best democracy ever," says Samir Marzouqi, 19, who lives in a country where citizens never vote.
As a national of the United Arab Emirates, he lives in what is now the only country in the Gulf which has no elected bodies. Political parties are banned.
But he points out that (…)
