Beat Berlusconi! Defeat the centre-right policies which have been wrecking our country for the last four years. Set up an alternative way of governing which will also bring about a real renewal in Italian politics, culture and democracy. These are now the priorities we agree on, despite the diversity of our history and opinions. This is why we are committed to a Union victory in the 2006 elections: an alliance unprecedented in the history of Italy - one (…)

A Talking head with glasses and light colored hair on Fox TV concluded, last night, that the supposed accidental killing of an Italian intelligence official was intentional.
He went on to explain that it was retribution dealt out to the Italians for arranging a deal with the terrorists to release an aid worker held hostage. In fact the agent was shot while he was covering the released woman hostage with his (…) -

ITALY IS another country, they do things differently there, to paraphrase L. P. Hartley. So you hope that a fortnight in the sun on the Riviera dei Fiori in Liguria will also mean a holiday from the stifling climate of “Don’t eat/drink/do that” back home. Even here, however, the dead hand of the EU-wide health and safety regime now seems to have la dolce vita within its grasp.
For example, the Vietato Fumare signs are spreading everywhere, since smoking in public places was (…) -

To seasoned observers of Italy’s colourful financial imbroglios, this summer’s Banca Antonveneta affair evokes memories of many of the country’s most lurid scandals.
As details emerge of how Antonio Fazio, governor of the Bank of Italy, sought to favour Banca Popolare Italiana, a small Italian bank, over Dutch lender ABN Amro in the takeover battle for Antonveneta, one past scandal comes readily to mind: the Banco Ambrosiano affair. This culminated with the body of Roberto (…) -
ITALY, OUR 51st STATE: Exporting War-Pretenses for Karl Rove, Robert Novak

Have our Italian friends consumed too much of MSG or prions in their pepperoni? Have they thus taken leave of their senses that they allow the US CIA to get away with kidnapping persons from Italy? Have they taken so many steroids in bulking up for the soccer game that they are so deficient of testosterone that they will not bring the 19 US spies in the Abu Omar opera to justice? Surely if the US can kidnap persons it wants from Milan’s ancient streets, then Italy (…) -

Karl Rove’s only full-time foreign-policy advisor is Michael Ledeen, a rabid anti-Arab, pro-Israel activist. The FBI is investigating Ledeen for procuring forged documents (shown here) on nonexistent WMD, which George Bush used to justify his war on Iraq. When Joseph Wilson exposed the farce, Rove helped "out" Wilson’s CIA wife. Did Ledeen procure the documents for Rove, and how might he have done that? The story includes multinational stool pigeon Rocco Martino, (…) -

Like so much else in our moment, it contravened laws the U.S. had once signed onto, pretzeled the English language, went directly to the darkside, was connected to various administration lies and manipulations that preceded the invasion of Iraq, and was based on taking the American taxpayer to the cleaners. I’m talking about a now-notorious Bush (…)
