France and Italy have undertaken to introduce a 35-hour working week. But this step forward has been greeted with serious reservations by most European Union governments, and with downright hostility by employers and heads of finance. The key word is now flexibility. But it remains to be seen at this month’s European Council summit what hope there really is for a "social Europe". What is sure is that European trades unions have been hopelessly slow off the mark.

Human rights body demands inquiry into failure of European military units to save 61 migrants on boat fleeing Libya
Europe’s paramount human rights body, the Council of Europe, has called for an inquiry into the deaths of 61 migrants in the Mediterranean, claiming an apparent failure of military units to rescue them marked a "dark day" for the continent.
Mevlüt Çavusoglu, president of the council’s parliamentary assembly, demanded an "immediate and comprehensive inquiry" into the fate of (…) -
German government looking to insure new quake-vulnerable Brazilian nuke

Despite Fukushima the German government intends to use tax funds to secure the construction of a Brazilian nuclear power station in the middle of an earthquake area.
The Campact online action organization (similar to our GetUP! Or Aaaz) is calling on people to protest against the imminent decision.
The support the German government is considering is in the form of 1.3 billion euros export insurance, that is if the deal goes sour, the German exporters to the project will be reimbursed (…) -

Nuclear waste wasting billions of German taxpayers’ euros

A cash-strapped German state will fork out billions of taxpayers’ euros to deal with nuclear waste produced by an industry two out of three Germans want axed.
And it won’t even be for permanent disposal, because worldwide there’s no safe technology for that.

Contribution demanded at meeting of eurozone ministers as proposals to shore up euro also outlined
EU ministers tonight spelt out the terms of Ireland’s €85bn international financial rescue package, and revealed the Dublin government will have to raid its national pension fund and other cash reserves for €17.5bn as a condition of the deal to bail out its banks and debt-laden economy.
