Monday, Mar 27, 2006 In late 2005, while war raged in the Middle East and oil prices rose drastically, governments and oil companies repeated the “market forces” mantra, saying there was nothing they could do about oil prices. However, the Venezuelan government-owned US-based petrol distribution company Citgo (with eight refineries and 14,000 petrol stations across the US) decided to discount up to 10% of its US sales, so that poor families in cold-weather US states could have access to (…)

An Open Letter to New Exxon/Mobil CEO, Rex Tillerson
April 1, 2006
Mr. Tillerson:
You have to be feeling pretty good about your new position heading the world’s largest oil and gas company. You stand astride the globe where, with few exceptions, the Congress is like putty in your hands, the White House is your House and the consuming public is powerless. Governments in the Third World may huff and puff, but Exxon/Mobil pretty much gets its way in dozens of arrangements completed and (…) -
Hey, General Assembly of MD: ”Reverse Deregulation!”
27 March 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
If I hear one more time that Maryland’s GOP Governor Robert Ehrlich is “pro-business,” I’m going to scream! Didn’t he put his hand on the Bible when he was sworn into office, in Annapolis, and implicitly promise to act as a trustee for the public good, “without partiality or prejudice?” Ehrlich is duty bound in all official matters by virtue of the supreme law of the land, the Constitution, to put the people first, not his fat cat business cronies and contributors. This should mean for him (…)

Oil Timeline
22 March 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsThis is a brief and fanciful timeline predicting the future of oil.
2006: The U.S. attacks Iran and secures its oil and natural gas supplies. For the next decade, Europe and Japan give their tacit approval in exchange for a share of oil.
2009: The U.S. starts angling for Venezuela’s oil, using the same pretext of national security it used against Iraq and is currently using against Iran.
2012: The U.S. invades Venezuela and secures its oil supplies.
2015: China and India demand a (…) -

ExxonMobil has been selected for boycott because of its apparent active involvement in U.S. policy in the Middle East in general and Iraq in particular, and its power to help change these policies.
Campbell Soup, Carlson Companies (Radisson Hotels, TGI Friday’s), Corning Inc., Metlife, Novartis, Pfizer, Verizon, Wells Fargo and Wyeth are also selected for boycott because these firms can influence ExxonMobil through board members they share in common with ExxonMobil.

Burst Oil Pipeline Causes ’Catastrophe’ in Alaska by Andrew Gumbel

Published on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 by the Independent / UK
A burst pipeline in Alaska’s North Slope has caused the Arctic region’s worst oil spill, spreading more than 250,000 gallons of crude oil over an area used by caribou herds and prompting environmentalists again to question the Bush administration’s drive for more oil exploration there.
The leak was first spotted by a British Petroleum worker 11 days ago, and was reported to have been plugged a few days later. Initial hopes (…) -

We are n the verge of the greatest inflationary binge in history. Our perceived wealth is the manifestation of one of the greatest misallocation of created assets and as such its existence will have profound ramifications. Our society, world society, has inflated expectations based upon financial leverage and useless credit. Our asset inflation and bubbles have created unsound distortions driven by (…) -
The Bush Administration’s Great State of the Union Ethanol Scam
25 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsDid Congress and the Senate "Day Trade" Ethanol on the day of the State of the Union address and rip-off Americans the following morning by selling it off?
It certainly looks as though the marriage between the White House, Senate and Congressional leadership and Wall Street has been exposed.
A side note: On January 18, 2006, Rep. Louise Slaughter stated that she had information relating to Rep. Tom DeLay and Rep. Bill Frist having "day-traders" working out of their offices. She said that (…) -
The Permanent Energy Crisis
17 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsby Michael T. Klare President Bush’s State of the Union comment that the United States is "addicted to oil" can be read as pure political opportunism. With ever more Americans expressing anxiety about high oil prices, freakish weather patterns, and abiding American ties to unsavory foreign oil potentates, it is hardly surprising that Bush sought to portray himself as an advocate of the development of alternative energy systems. But there is another, more ominous way to read his comments: (…)
