What does it mean when a democracy removes the vote from several million adults? How is the political process affected when certain groups — racial minorities and low-income whites, in particular — bear the brunt of this disenfranchisement?
These are not abstract questions intended to tax the minds of students in a poli-sci class. Rather, they are questions about a massive contraction of the franchise that is occurring, today, largely in the shadows, in the United (…)

Block the Vote
30 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
In a country that spends so much time extolling the glories of democracy, it’s amazing how many elected officials go out of their way to discourage voting. States are adopting rules that make it hard, and financially perilous, for nonpartisan groups to register new voters. They have adopted new rules for maintaining voter rolls that are likely to throw off many eligible voters, and they are imposing unnecessarily tough ID requirements.
Florida recently reached a new low when it actually (…) -
Open Letter To Mayor Nagin of New Orleans
24 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentDear Mayor Nagin,
Congratulations on your re-election.
I would like to suggest to you a form of housing that is low cost, yet extremely durable and energy efficient. I first heard of it in Mother Earth News magazine - www.motherearthnews.com - which has been publishing since the 60’s. The article can be found in the October/November 2005 issue. (They are a bi-monthly publication.) It is called Earth Bag construction.
This could really be a good alternative around the entire Gulf Coast (…) -

The Silence of the Scams: Psychological Resistance to Facing Election Fraud
BY DIANE PERLMAN
Invisible History
Few Americans know about the historic event that happened on January 6, 2005, the official date for counting electoral votes. For the first time since 1877, congressmembers challenged the electoral count. Representative Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Ohio, accompanied by the lone senator, Barbara Boxer of California, led the challenge to the Ohio vote count. Although massive (…) -
EL PRESIDENTE BUSH
17 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsThe only way we can secure our borders is to pass an enforcement-only bill, and then see to it that it is actually enforced. Our nation’s security cannot be held hostage to the politics of amnesty any longer.
Fact is, 20 million people have invaded America, and no one, not even President Bush, knows a damn thing about any of them. Except, that is, those illegal aliens who are 29% of the inmate population in federal prisons.
Bush seems to believe that Hispanic migrants are above the law, (…) -
American Apathy: Ethics be hanged!
4 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsToday a new CNN poll revealed what to me is a shocking fact; only 4% of the electorate find ethical behavior in the U.S.government a major issue!
This is outrageous!
Does the public care about fining Halliburton, KBR and other nefarious lawbreaking Iraq contractors for their disgusting actions against the Iraqis and American taxpayers? NO!
Does the public care or wonder about what happened to 8.8 billion dollars of reconstruction money for Iraq? NO!
Does the public care about the (…) -

An Easy Viable Way of Taking the Money Out of the Election Process
1 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsWell after seeing so many people saying what we can do about all the money spent to be elected, I sat and thought for a few minutes, and came up with this, when any candidate takes office he accepts an oath of office. Why not make each candidate when applying for office, fill out a questionnaire, of their interpretation of the constitution and bill of rights and all subsequent amendments. Sign a form stating that the first time a decision is made by me that deviates from my interpretation, (…)

Eight Months After Katrina, there are still nearly 300,000 people who have not returned to New Orlea

On Monday, April 17, 2006, two bodies were found buried beneath what used to be a home in the Lower 9th Ward. Their discovery raised to 17 the number of Hurricane Katrina fatalities that have been discovered in New Orleans in the past month and a half. Katrina is now directly blamed for the deaths of 1,282 Louisiana residents. Eight months after Katrina, the state reports 987 people are (…) -
Bush Pioneer withdraws support"I can’t in good conscience write another $25,000 check at this time"
25 April 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsFirst, a little background - I obtained this letter from a first-hand source, and she asked me to spread it as far as I can.
Jack Overstreet, lifelong Republican, is a Bush Pioneer, having donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bush ’00 and Bush ’04, even contributed to his ’04 Camapign as found here: http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_result.php?first=Ja... (He lives in Colorado and Wyoming respectively), a oil man himself, and everything else, just about the worst Republican you’d (…)
