Isteeled myself as the camera panned slowly over a vast, sprawling mine operation. I’d come to see the new Charlize Theron movie, "North Country," which is supposed to be based on a real story of sexual harassment at the Eveleth Taconite Co., in Minnesota’s Iron Range. I was expecting the film to bring alive the hostile environment the women hired there in the 1970s and ’80s had endured. If it was at all true to life, the moviecould be rough going. But I hoped it would expose (…)

Why Dowd Doesn’t Know What Men Really Want
13 November 2005 par (Open-Publishing)

Today’s commentators say it’s a shame that Maureen Dowd should depend on such flaky research and flimsy evidence when writing about feminism. Dowd’s article, based on weak research, was the most e-mailed story from The New York Times yesterday.
Editor’s Note: The following is a commentary. The opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily the views of Women’s eNews.
A growing media narrative over the past year says men do not like high-achieving (…) -

I just finished watching that movie on Lifetime TV called “Human Trafficking” and it turned my stomach to know how young girls and young boys are trafficked world-wide and even within this country.
So we must be their voices and their power to end their slavery where they are worked to death for years as sex slaves. According to this movie the selling of human beings ranks third after the selling of weapons and drugs. Also according to this movie approximately (…) -

"North Country:" Important Lessons
28 October 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
by Laurie Beacham and Amber Hard Today we are appalled by the story told in "North Country," a film that chronicles the first class-action lawsuit brought for sexual harassment. The suit was led by Lois Jenson, a single mother trying to provide for her family, who became one of the first women to work at Minnesota’s Eveleth Mines.
The sexual harassment she and other women at Eveleth Mines suffered in the 1970s and ’80s was, indeed, appalling. They endured lewd jokes, taunting and (…) -

US social conservatives have one big objection to Harriet Miers, President George W. Bush’s beleaguerednominee to the Supreme Court:they cannot trust her to shift America’s highest court to the right on the issue of abortion.
But when it comes to defending the power of the president to wage the war on terror - even if that means making unpopular choices about the civil liberties of Americans and foreigners alike - conservatives think Ms Miers will be (…) -

September 20’s prime target for press critics, social scientists and feminists was the New York Times front-page story "Many Women at Elite Colleges Set Career Path to Motherhood," by Louise Story (Yale ’03). Through interviews and a questionnaire e-mailed to freshmen and senior women residents of two Yale colleges (dorms), Story claims to have found that 60 percent of these brainy and energetic young women plan to park their expensive diplomas in the bassinet and become (…) -

William Bennett, Republican hack politician, former Reagan administration Education Secretary, Director of Drug Control policy under George Bush the First, author of “The Book of Virtues” and someone who lost 8 million dollars on high-stakes gambling is back defending his party’s anti-abortion stance. He informed his radio program audience that if we aborted all black babies then the crime rate would reduce drastically.
