The US-dominated world order is being challenged by a new spirit of independence in the global south
The prospect that Europe and Asia might move towards greater independence has troubled US planners since the second world war. The concerns have only risen as the "tripolar order" - Europe, North America and Asia - has continued to evolve.
Every day Latin America, too, (…) -

1 commentAbout 10,000 protesters have marched in Mexico City, where 11,000 delegates and representatives met at the 4th World Water Forum to discuss ways to improve supplies for the poor.
Opponents say that the seven-day forum, which began on Thursday, is a cover for privatisation.
Participants from 121 countries, debated topics including the developing world’s growing reliance on bottled water bought from private companies, instead of on public water systems, which some call a form of (…) -
The Failure of Hugo-Bashing by Mark Weisbrot

Despite U.S. efforts, the Venezuelan leader is winning friends across Latin America.
It was yet another public relations coup for Venezuela: Vila Isabel, the samba club sponsored mainly by the Venezuelan government, won the parade competition in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnaval last week. A float with a giant likeness of Simon Bolivar, combined with thousands of ornately costumed participants parading down the avenue, trumpeted the winning theme: Latin American unity.
U.S. Secretary of State (…) -

CURITIBA (BRAZIL), 17 March 2006 - United Nations talks on the global trade in genetically modified (GM) foods and crops ended here today with an agreement on the labelling of GM grains traded worldwide.
Friends of the Earth welcomed the agreement as a "small step forward" but attacked the biotech industry and the trade interests of a few countries for blocking progress towards better protection for developing countries and the environment.
The biotech industry consistently opposed clear (…) -
IF THIS IS JOURNALISM....
18 March 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
The Italian daily La Repubblica in its Monday March 13 edition has dedicated an entire page to a bit of news that simply does not exist. In substance-the article is not available online-the usual Omero Ciai’s fanciful pen holds that since an exodus of biblical proportions of Cuban baseball players toward the US is now in progress, the perfidious Fidel Castro would like to extirpate baseball from Cuba and substitute it with cricket.
Omero Ciai goes on for an entire pagelet with his little (…) -
The "Yellow Peril" and the Latin Invasion!
17 March 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsDoes anyone recall the incredibly realistic Right wing John Milius film "Red Dawn"? It told the story of an invasion by the Russians, the Nicaraguans, the Bolivians and the Cubans. They were enabled,of course,by the U.N.blue helmets.
Well, truth is stranger than fiction! Recent reports indicate that China is beginning to train South American troops! Soon (I’m sure think tanks are musing), the Latin hoards...right on "our doorstep" will swarm across our secure borders and take over our (…) -
The People Defeated the anti-Venezuela Mack Resolution! by Brian Becker, ANSWER (USA)
17 March 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsDear friends of Venezuela,
Following a massive outpouring of opposition, H. Con. Res. 328 (the Mack resolution) was withdrawn from the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs in the House Committee on International Relations. Due for a vote today, Rep. Mack (R-FL) and his supporters pulled the resolution before a vote could take place. Clearly, they felt that the resolution would now fail.
In recent weeks the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, VoteNoWar.org, the Venezuelan Information Office (…) -

Green Left Weekly; March 13, 2006
Today our government celebrates its first month, the first 30 days of the democratic and cultural revolution that we are heading, with the overwhelming popular mandate of December 18, 2005, when Bolivians from the countryside and cities decided to turn the page on a history full of injustice and discrimination.
We have named a cabinet that is representative of the social movements, business owners, the middle classes, indigenous peoples, (…)
