Hampton University students faced disciplinary hearings on Dec 2, 2005 at 9:00 am in the Student Center cyber lounge. As I arrived I immediately noticed bands of protesters already picketing right outside the University. By the time the six other students and I met with the parents and lawyers in front of the room that the hearing was to be held, there were already over 20 student supporters standing right outside the door. As we made last minute preparations to our (…)

By Maria Sacchetti and Jenna Russell
More than 5,000 high school students in five of the state’s largest school districts have removed their names from military recruitment lists, a trend driven by continuing casualties in Iraq and a well-organized peace movement that has urged students to avoid contact with recruiters.
The number of students removing their names has jumped significantly over the past year, especially in school systems with many low-income and minority students, where (…) -

Tuesday’s school board election in Dover, Pennsylvania, a quiet rural community near the Maryland border where churches seem to outnumber streetlights, was a fitting climax to a year of bitter division there. In a contest with national implications, Dover voters tossed an entire slate of Intelligent Design supporters, replacing them with backers of evolution.
The eight incumbents, calling themselves “Dover First,” were defendants in a lawsuit over a board decision last (…) -

For the first time in two weeks, public schools in British Columbia were open for business yesterday. Teachers had voted over the weekend by a 77% margin to accept a mediated settlement to the dispute recommended by arbitrator Vince Ready. In the wake of the decision, there is much public debate and discussion, including among the ranks of teachers, about what was achieved in the struggle.
Last Thursday, Ready released his proposed settlement. It included an award of $40 (…) -

Just for a moment, can we all jump ahead, say one or two years from now, into what could be a very real scenario. The draft has been reinstated. Our sons and daughters are faced with the choice of going to war or jail. Parents are in shock. They can’t believe this has happened to their very own. Shock turns to anger and confusion. Their former lack of concern and awareness of their government’s imperialistic agenda is starting to become the biggest mistake of their (…) -
