SUE ZEIDLER IN LOS ANGELES
THEY are victims of the United States’ growing mortgage crisis - low-paid workers whose homes have been repossessed amid rising interest rates, a stagnant property market and a lax lending regime.
But in Los Angeles, where having a car is as essential as owning a home, many are sleeping in their vehicles to ensure a roof over their head.
Campaigners for the homeless expect more to hole up in their cars as they lose homes due to the problems that have dogged (…)

Millenium promise conference
9 November 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
In 2006, how to explain so much poverty around the world? Today, november 9th, a conference about poverty among children, the "Millenium promise conference", is opening in Montreal, Canada. Will be there, star actress Mia Farrow and former US President, Bill Clinton. It is strange indeed to see Clinton there, the man who cut welfare benefits when he was president. Maybe he is a new man now.
It is difficult to explain why our political leaders with plenty of diplomas from top (…) -

Poverty forced its way to the top of President Bush’s agenda in the confusing days after Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast and flooded New Orleans. Confronted with one of the most pressing political crises of his presidency, Bush, who in the past had faced withering criticism for speaking little about the poor, said the nation has a solemn duty to help them.
"All of us saw on television, there’s . . . some deep, persistent poverty in this region," he said (…) -

Now, six months after returning, Beckford lives in a homeless shelter.

EUROPEAN COORDINATION AGAINST PRECARIOUSNESS: STRASBURG, JUNE 9th-10th-11th
For decades, a fierce neo-liberal policy has done its work all over Europe. We - as well as the environment around us - endure, everyday, the effects of this alienating system. This logic finds expression in all-out industrialism, everlasting perpetuation of established elites and ideological formatting, relayed by mass-media, governments and omnipresent aggressive advertising.
Economy has become the sole (…) -

By Daud Salman in Baghdad (ICR No. 170, 29-Mar-06)
March 31, 2006
A government decision to cut food rations has hurt poor Iraqis who cannot afford high prices on the open market, say economists and Baghdad residents.
Despite rising poverty, the government has decided to cut the food ration budget from four to three billion US dollars in 2006, as the country shifts from a socialist to a free market economy.
The Iraqi government has provided subsidies on basic food items such as flour (…)
