LONDON, Oct 12 (IPS) - ’People Power’ had become another of those slogans until the rallies Feb. 15 last year against the imminent invasion of Iraq. Those rallies were not only the biggest Europe has ever seen, but everything since then proves that people were marching on the right path.
The first European Social Forum (ESF) held late 2002 in Florence, Italy, gave birth to those rallies. The success of the rallies, backed by the force of the demonstrations against (…)

’Corporate’ ESF sparks rival conference
14 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
by Matthew Tempest
A rival counter-conference to this week’s European Social Forum in London is being planned to protest at the "hijacking" of the anti-war, global justice event by mainstream organisations and individuals such as the trade unions and the mayor of London.
This week’s ESF - the third annual meeting of leftwing and environmental activists from across Europe - is expected to attract around 20,000 people from across Europe for three days of debate. It will culminate in a (…) -
James Baker’s Double Life : A Special Investigation

When President Bush appointed former Secretary of State James Baker III as his envoy on Iraq’s debt on December 5, 2003, he called Baker’s job "a noble mission." At the time, there was widespread concern about whether Baker’s extensive business dealings in the Middle East would compromise that mission, which is to meet with heads of state and persuade them to forgive the debts owed to them by Iraq. Of particular concern was his relationship with merchant bank and defense (…) -
Indymedia to U.S., U.K., Swiss and Italian Authorities: "Hands Off Our Websites"
13 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
Evidence is beginning to mount that the authorities of at least four countries (Switzerland, Italy, U.K. and U.S.A.) are involved in last week’s seizure of two of Indymedia’s servers that brought down more than 20 of the Indymedia network’s web sites and several internet radio streams. Indymedia has yet to receive any official statement or information about what the order entailed or why it was issued.
An FBI spokesperson, Joe Parris, confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the FBI issued a (…) -
Republicans Love Red China

Yes, I said it. The Republicans love Communist China. It was Nixon who turned public opinion in support of their terroristic, Communist regime. In modern times, the Bush Pentagon’s new “world map” indicates that China is our military ally! What the heck is going on here? I understand that Bush is better than Kerry. In this case, lesser-evilism still wreaks mucho evil.
It was a Democrat who took us to fight China’s onslaught into Vietnam, and a Republican who retreated. It (…) -
FBI took the hard drives of IMC servers in the UK
8 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
2 comments"The FBI issued an order to Rackspace in the US (Indymedia’s provider with offices
in the US and London) to remove physically one of our servers. The order was
so short term that Rackspace had to give away our hard drives in the UK. The
servers hosted numerous local IMCs. If you find a site is down: that might be
the reason"
The servers "ahimsa 2" have the following Indymedias: Nantes, Belgrade,
Liege, Oost-Vlaanderen, Andorra, Euskalherria, Lille, Nice, the U.K., Poland,
Uruguay, (…) -
Intelligence Matters
30 September 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
I am so glad our intelligence was working two months before 9/11? No wonder we didn’t believe the advance warnings, we were too busy working with other governments to keep our president safe from terrorists who might use planes packed with explosives and crash them into buildings in Genoa. Our intelligence didn’t fail, they were just too busy with other "stuff". One does not need to be an investigative reporter, a deep thinker, or sherlock holmes to figure this one out.

So what if they dare?... Revolution" The referendum as an example of international struggle.
15 August 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
by Roland Denis
The referendum, as we had thought, will constitute a fabulous scenario for thedeployment of an extraordinary potential of movilization, organization, debate, andof liberation, to a certain degree, of several points of popular organization that for along time had been trapped by the bureaucracy introduced by government- supporting political parties; the organized or disorganized spontaneity with whichthe patrols, the local commands as well as the defense preparation have (…) -
Nukes in the US Protectorate of Iraq? Iran Looks to Its West and Says: I Don’t Think So
23 June 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
By RON JACOBS
In one more instance of duplicity and hypocrisy as regards the US plans for Iraq, Undersecretary of State John Bolton stated June 8, 2004 that Iraq could one day build nuclear power plants. Although that day is, in Bolton’s words "a ways down the road," it could happen once things settled down there. When that will be is anyone’s guess, of course, but that won’t stop the nuclear industry from salivating over more taxpayer dollars going into their pockets.
Bolton’s statement (…) -

Baghdad Fumes as the Americans Seek Safety in ’Tombstone’ Forts

The US army is paralyzing the heart of Baghdad as it builds ever more elaborate fortifications to protect its bases against suicide bombers.
"Do not enter or you will be shot," reads an abrupt notice attached to some razor wire blocking a roundabout at what used to be the entrance to the 14 July bridge over (…)
