Websites boast ’slaughter’ of women

Concern was mounting last night over the fate of two Italian aid workers kidnapped in Baghdad more than a fortnight ago, after two separate statements appeared on the internet claiming that the women had been killed.
Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, both 29, were seized with two of their Iraqi colleagues in daylight from their office in central Baghdad on September 7. They had been working in Iraq for several months for the aid agency Bridge to Baghdad.

Quit Iraq, and quit fast. It’s that simple

TONY BLAIR has declared that Britain is now fighting a “new war” in Iraq. He did so on the anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, an inauspicious precursor. Arnhem was a notorious “bridge too far”, a politico-military decision that led to defeat and the needless loss of British lives. But at Arnhem Britain knew what it was about. When Mr Blair calls on all “sensible and decent people” to support him in this new Iraq conflict we can only ask, to what end?

Science, not politics

Condoms are ineffective in the fight against AIDS. Abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. An emergency contraceptive, recommended as safe and effective by two independent scientific advisory panels, is not approved for over- the-counter status in the United States.
These are just a few of the positions the current US administration has taken, in each case ignoring scientific evidence to the contrary. It arrived at these conclusions by either disbanding (…) -

We have at last watched this brilliant film, which, as my wife has since said, should be compulsory viewing for every single voter in the U.S.A., and I hope that as many of you as possible have seen it.
Having been made aware by so many of you of the deliberate misinformation spread across the U.S.A. by media subject to the control of the neo-cons, and their failure to tell the public so much of what goes on in the word, we obviously do not know how much was known on (…) -
I don’t want to die. I need help, Mr Blair

IRAQ hostage Kenneth Bigley last night begged Tony Blair to help save his life, saying: "You are the only person now on God’s earth that I can speak to."
In a dramatic video released by his kidnappers, the 62-year-old from Liverpool pleaded with the Prime Minister to "show compassion" for his plight..
Four hours later, Mr Bigley’s family appealed to the extremists to show mercy and spare his life. His son, Craig, 33, said: "You have proved to the world that you are (…) -
"Islamic Jihad Organization" Says It Killed Simona Pari and Simona Torretta

Italy’s government tried to reassure an anguished nation Thursday that two women hostages in Iraq were most likely still alive, saying an Islamist group’s claim to have killed them was "unreliable."
The government moved swiftly after a group calling itself the Jihad Organization said in a statement it had killed the women because Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had not bowed to demands to withdraw Italian troops from Iraq.

Yusuf Islam, who scored several Top Ten hits in the Seventies as Cat Stevens before leaving the business to devote himself to Islam, was denied entry into the U.S. yesterday, because his name was on several border protection watch lists. Islam’s plane, en route to Washington from London, was rerouted to Bangor, Maine, where the artist was detained for questioning.
After recording rock classics like "Wild World" and "Moonshadow," he quit the music industry in 1977, adopted a (…) -

Ernesto Guevara - a revolutionary in the making
by Maarten Vanheuverswyn
“Always be capable of feeling deep inside any injustice committed against anyone anywhere in the world. It is the finest quality of a revolutionary.”
Che Guevara
The Motorcycle Diaries, the recently released film on Ernesto Che Guevara, is an exciting adaptation of Guevara’s writings of the same name. Also based on Alberto Granado’s memoirs Travelling With Che Guevara, Che’s travelling companion, the director (…) -
Depleted Uranium, weapons of war - the Pandora’s box

The US is the largest single user of depleted uranium (DU) in weaponry. It is also the largest seller and exporter of depleted uranium weapon technology.
DU is used in smart bombs, bunker busters, anti-tank weapons, and the tow missiles. All very highly effective. As we saw in Gulf War I, the US bunker buster bombs tipped with DU were penetrating concrete shielding up to 10 feet thick
The bunker buster"s effectiveness is that it can penetrate and then explode - (…)
