As the late Jim Croce once said, “Gonna tell you a story that you won’t believe.” The other day I read a news story about NASA’s measurements of the growing ocean acidity in the Arctic Ocean. The acidity of the water was making the ocean warmer because it was holding more heat and removing less carbon dioxide from the air. Then fortunately, or unfortunately, I was sidetracked by the next big Tea Bagger movement.
The Google ad at the bottom of the page said “An (…)

Stuck on Stupid
4 October 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By David Glenn Cox
Hello, everyone. My name is Dave and I’m a news junkie.
"Hi, Dave," the room answers.
I come from a family of addicts. Even as a child my parents gave me books and magazines, and even a dictionary. So at this stage in my life I feel I’m too far gone for help. It started innocently enough, sports trivia, but before I knew it I was hooked on facts. I read encyclopedias in the dark under my blanket with a flashlight, and when I found a name that I’d never heard of I (…) -
The Last Republican
21 September 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By David Glenn Cox
As a survivor of the Republican revolution, which began when Ronald Reagan took office, I have seen the world turned upside down like a sort of Mad Hatter’s tea party. You see, the Republicans were going to get the boot heel of the federal government off your back.
They began by privatizing the student loan program. No more would students apply by mail and receive checks from some faceless bureaucrat at the Treasury Department at the prime interest rate. Now with your (…) -
The Lost Children

It is human nature that impels the majority of us to be followers. Normal people, after five or six years of wandering in the desert, will begin to ask questions of their leadership. But a faith-based leadership leans heavily on the desire not to be wrong. No one likes being wrong, and many, if not most of us, will jump through hoops to prove that we are not wrong.
This defines our political landscape today. The Republican party is aimless and wandering; they have lost (…) -
Falling into the Trap

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A U.S. warplane summoned by German troops fired on hijacked fuel trucks in Afghanistan before dawn on Friday, killing as many as 90 people in an incident that could trigger a backlash against NATO.
A friend of mine was a Vietnam vet and had told me his story of a young Vietnamese child who had run towards the lead armored personnel carrier in the column directly ahead of his own. The boy was perhaps nine or ten, and as he ran towards the (…) -
Losing Touch with A Good Friend

I recently came across an interview where Ben Stiller interviewed the eighty-eight-year-old actor Mickey Rooney. Stiller was trying to teach Rooney about Twitter and how to tweet. He explained to Rooney how with Twitter he had immediate access to the Internet and messaging. Rooney smiled and listened attentively as Stiller showed him a message on his twitter. “Oldest daughter shaved her legs for the first time today.”
Rooney, still smiling, asked, “That’s entertaining (…) -
A Time When All Good Men are Gone
28 August 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By David Glenn Cox
The Native Americans warned of a time when all good men are gone, and with the death of Edward Kennedy this prophecy seems to be coming closer to fulfillment. Who now will stand with Kennedy’s principles? Who will stand and vote no to war as Kennedy did in 2003, when popular opinion cries out that we must?
Kennedy was fortunate to have lived in a safe state, a state that he loved and a state that loved him back. He had the burden and good fortune to be born into a (…) -
Into the Hut of Baba Yaga

The river of time cuts deeply into the banks, dictating course over current. What is today fresh, muddy ground, becomes tomorrow bedrock. When Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal he said that he did so to end our long national nightmare. The nightmare was not ours but Richard Nixon’s. We, as Americans, had just witnessed our Constitution work as its founders had intended.
So what if a sick, old, politically disgraced man was allowed to go (…) -
Who Are These Democrats ?
21 August 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By David Glenn Cox
Times change and political definitions change as well. The Republican Party was born of an anti-slavery plank in the days of Abraham Lincoln. The Republicans were the party of reform and were, dare I say it, liberals. The Democrats were the party of the status quo, supporting slavery and big business. In my childhood I was raised with John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon Johnson, and all of them basking in the light of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry (…) -
Permanently Unemployed
14 August 2009 par (Open-Publishing)

I have come to the conclusion that I am permanently unemployed; after almost two years of non-stop hunting I don’t admit defeat but only the inevitable. Meanwhile, the mainstream media are doing all that they can do to convince you that the economy is doing much better and that prosperity is just around the corner.
They proudly boast, “First time jobless claims down lowest since April!” Down from 558,000 first-time claims last week to 554,000 first-time claims this (…)
